TEAM IMMERSION
TEAM BUILDING

CLIENT’S BRIEF
Our client approached us during a period of organizational transition where team dynamics had become increasingly complex. The department was experiencing challenges in communication and collaboration. Leadership recognized the need for an intervention that would help rebuild trust, strengthen relationships, and create a foundation for more effective teamwork. They sought our expertise in designing a staff retreat that would provide a fresh perspective and create an environment where honest, constructive dialogue could flourish.
WHAT WE DID
We designed a half-day workshop utilizing LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) that created a neutral space for team members to connect and reflect. Through carefully structured activities, participants first explored their shared aspirations for the future, building individual LEGO® models that represented their hopes for the team. This initial focus on possibilities rather than problems helped establish a positive atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable contributing.
We began by encouraging participants to collaboratively define their vision of the ideal team of the future. This positive grounding set the tone for the workshop. Each participant built individual LEGO® models representing their personal aspirations for the team, which were then shared and discussed as a group. By using metaphors and stories, team members could express their perspectives in a non-confrontational way, leading to meaningful discussions about their working relationships. The physical act of building and sharing stories naturally fostered empathy and understanding among participants.
Next, participants reflected on the team’s current identity through LEGO® models, exploring their capabilities, dynamics, and culture. This step also highlighted barriers that might hinder the team from reaching its full potential.
In the final step, we guided the team to envision a future where current challenges were resolved. This exercise shifted the group’s focus from problems to solutions, sparking ideas and discussions about the actions needed to achieve their aspirational team identity. This constructive process naturally brought team members together, requiring them to listen to each other, find common ground, and work toward shared solutions. The physical nature of LSP helped break down invisible barriers, enabling authentic connections to form organically through shared creativity and play.

THE OUTCOMES
The workshop fostered creativity and deep engagement, enabling participants from diverse functions to explore sensitive topics in a psychologically safe and supportive environment. The tactile and visual aspects of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY was particularly effective in helping team members express and work through complex interpersonal dynamics. By the end of the session, participants had not only developed a clearer shared vision for their future but had also established stronger personal connections through their collaborative building experiences.
The use of solution-focused questioning helped shift the team’s mindset from a problem-oriented to a possibility-driven approach. This created momentum for positive change and established a unified vision of their future identity.
This workshop showcased how LSP can transform team dynamics. By fostering trust and inspiring a shared vision, the team left the session more connected, aligned, and motivated to work collaboratively toward their goals.
